This is the long forgotten sleeves (and photos) of Wendy’s so far ONE AND ONLY solo single release..

The photos were taken during the making of the equally forgotten (deliberately) terrible video for the track..

(I hope to have BOTH version of the video up soon so stay tuned for that..kay?)

The single entered the UK charts at 103 in 2005..

The album was an unmitigated flop..

The “partnership” with One Little Indian ended unceremoniously with all “Racine” material being REMOVED from the label’s official site in 2006..

“Pia K” also seems to have been buried in the mists of time..

(No doubt “Notting Hill Publishers” had something to do with this as they seem to have faded from Wendy’s failed solo efforts too..)

The very fact that recent “bios” still discuss Transvision Vamp and the (now) 18 year old Costello album..

Yet avoid talking about this “recent” 2005 single/video..

Says all it needs to.

Wendy no doubt would like you to forget this even ever EXISTED..

But it so clearly did.

June 2009 will be the 5th anniversary of Wendy officially starting her solo career..

(She registered the now defunct website,and the “Pia K” company)

4 record/distribution deals,2 websites,2 message boards,8 musicians,2500 fans have come and gone since then.

Like a Greased Monkey.

Ever wondered why Wendy James (and to a lesser extent Transvision Vamp) seemed to ALWAYS be in the tabloids/magazines/gossip columns..

Usually under a photo in a “story” which often had a headline line..

“Saucy Vamp Wendy..”

or

“Vamping It Up..”

or

“Controversial Wendy Does Something Controversial With Her  Controversial Breasts..”

or

“Shock Horror,Horror Shock,Shocking Horroton,Shorror,Hock…”

Etc,Etc,Etc…

Once Upon A Long Time Ago..?

Well in FACT all of these “stories” were made up to accompany (and justify ) the PHOTO which was the real selling point..

These self same photos were given “freely” to tabloids/magazines/gossip columns in ADVANCE of the “shock” article appearing..

By people known as PLUGGERS…

(They were sent the photos by the record company and were then paid to get them into any and all available media of that time..)

They of course were PAID according to how many “exposures” in the media they could manage..

If they got many they got more MONEY..

If they got less they got less MONEY…

For their own records they often kept SHEETS (like those above) with negatives of the photos there were to PLUG on them..

(The RED LETTERING is original too and was to tell them the SIZE and TYPE of which photos they were to push..)

Then they would bring CLIPPINGS of the tabloid “articles” to the label and collect their 30 pieces of silver..

The artist (Wendy James) knew all about their photos being used this way..

(Seeing as their manager would personally select which photos were to be PUSHED..)

But very often would “act” surprised or offended..

Wendy did this numerous times..

(Her speciality was feigning disgust at the “LIES” stories she knew were made up all along..)

No doubt many of you can RECOGNISE many of the photos above..

After all..

The chances are they appeared in your newspaper’s showbiz section..

AS IF BY MAGIC…!

Wendy would read it..

(she would then swear on a stack of bibles she hadn’t…)

They complain loudly about it’s sheer tackiness..

“why don’t they focus on my music not my breasts or arse..?”

Which is a page of P.R. Baloney handed to him by MCA in Canada…

and he obviously is pretending he gives a shit….!

As you can see Wendy is so clearly “needing to escape Transvision Vamp..”

"I want to be remembered as the first lady of America,'' says
Transvision Vamp lead singer Wendy James, in a harsh
sandpaper-cockney voice that sounds like the result of years of
nicotine abuse.

Hardly the dulcet angel tones you'd expect the ambitious and
beautiful singer -- often unfairly called the ``English Madonna'' --
to possess.

But that's exactly what Wendy James is about: glorious contradiction.
Transvision Vamp's third and latest LP, Little Magnets and the Bubble
of Babble, is full of lovely dichotomies between bubblegum pop and
punk, and between song-smithing and white noise. And -- almost
shockingly -- there exists deep within the grooves a tie to southern
American swamp-rock.

``During the making of the album we were listening to Dr. John's
Night Tripper,'' explains James. ``It subconsciously crept into the
way we were making music -- the underproduction, the girls wailing,
the way he mumbles -- the whole atmosphere, really.''

Such left-field influences shouldn't come as a shock -- after all,
Wendy James has devoted her whole career to bashing with an
iconoclastic sledgehammer against the conventions of pop music.

At least part of this nonconformism comes from James' formative years
as a teenager in an England caught up in the rebellious throes of
punk rock.

``Oh, yeah, the Clash, the Pretenders, Patti Smith all influenced
me,'' says James, vehemently, ``with their attitude, their ideals,
and their ability to at least provoke a little thought.''

Little Magnets and the Bubble of Babble follows beautifully the
artistic license of the punks. The band has crafted each song as an
entity unique unto itself -- yet each contains the best of the core
disciplines Transvision Vamp has embraced. ``Pressure Times,'' for
example, is beautifully glam in a way the New York Dolls would have
approved of.

``Yeah, I used to listen to quite a bit of glam stuff,'' she says.
``New York Dolls, T.Rex, that kind of thing.''

And yet, smack in the middle of the sexual glam decadence is a cover
of Bob Dylan's ``Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?''

``I covered it 'cause (Dylan's) the best. I thought it would be
interesting to sing the lyrics from the female point of view.''

Like the punks she has so admired, James herself has provoked the
churning of more than a few brainpans, too. Her outspokenness --
about such touchy subjects as self-control of her own sexuality --
and her penchant for such self-promoting statements as ``There'll be
a point in my career when I win an Oscar,'' has garnered her a
plethora of devoted fans and equally-devoted enemies in the music
press. In England, she's a celeb, and the press reviles celebrity.

``It's because those papers (New Musical Express and Melody Maker)
are run by misogynist public school pricks,'' says James with a jaded
vitriol.

``Sure, they're resentful (of a successful woman),'' James continues.
``But they'll do that to any successful artists -- they nurture you,
then they hate you. You can ask any band. Almost everyone is shocked
at their low-down, dirty tactics. Elvis Costello said, when Sounds
folded: `One down, two to go.' ''

Both of these weekly papers are, contradictorily, gorged with photos
and articles about James -- almost as if they were voyeuristically
following her about, watching her every move from behind a curtain.

James has a pat explanation for this phenomena: ``It's 'cause my face
sells, baby!'' She laughs broadly. ``That isn't me saying that,
that's their editors. They hate me but they have to have me.''

Soon, James is convinced, America too will want to have her. The
small-minded record company Transvision Vamp is signed to let the
first few albums slip through their fingers -- but they're not about
to let that happen to the stunning Babble.

``The record company was unfortunately caught up in political tangles
within the company which coincided with the release of our first two
records,'' James says, a little bitterly. ``But this time 'round
they're putting their full support behind the record.''

Wendy James wants to conquer America, this much is obvious. Whether
the narrow-minded American record-buying public will accept James'
in-your-face attitude -- or whether there is enough room in the
states for two blonde and ambitious Monroe-a-likes -- remains to be
seen.

The flamboyant singer wants her music, however, to stand alone,
beyond the loudness of her public persona, and her ambition to take
these shores by storm.

``I want people to get that anything's possible, that life is your
own,'' she says. ``Take control and enjoy it -- and don't be
satisfied to settle for less.''
