“…Je Suis En Enfer…”

Wendy James was(and continues to be) THE sex symbol of alternative british music since the end of the 80’s and at the beginning of the 1990’s was liberated from the mythical Transvision vamp,in that decade she was the equal of Madonna. Now resident in new York she continues that form in the Racine project, filled with all the provocation and punk attitude. Her “femme fatale” appearance is a result of her cultivating it.In that rebirth come the beautiful singer enamoured with the Spanish people from her time in Granada,Madrid & Barcelona, cities in which she animated the night in her guise of Dj…

Where does this habit of performing in clubs come from?

“…I play at the hobby of being a dj.Above all when Racine (we) are on tour.I like to have sessions in the cities in which we play.Sometimes I hope the same night after the concert.Other times on my own (lonesome). The nights I spent in the venues (Who) in Granada,8 and a half in Madrid and Razz in Barcelona were fantastic.Ecah song augmented the intensity with which people experienced me in public. It was just like I lifted everyone up.And then the final with “no Woman No Cry from Bob Marley when everyone was leaving the club…Really beautiful…”

So am I lead to believe you like the venues (clubs) more than the band playing..?

“…I wouldn’t say that.I live for the songs I write,for the concerts,the recording sessions,the touring,the contact with the public and with my band.Those are,literally,the reason why I live….”

And what are the artists you never play in your deejay sessions?

“Well no one specific. But I am a rock and roll chick! so I put in much rock, some ska, reggae, hip hop and a little of the classics from Studio 54 also there is a selection of new unknown bands who I think are deserving of me exposing them.It must have attitude, rhythm and melody as I believe music is in the blood…”

The interest in rock suggests to me that this is your mode and what you listen to in your real life?

“…I am just about to buy the best of M.I.A and of course “American Gangster” by Jay z.But my favourite band of the moment is The Black Lips..”

I seem to be understanding your musical tastes and personality. Is it true that you put Elvis Costello above all in your inspiration?

“…There are musicians who have left marks (impressions) in my life, who have influenced my lifestyle. But also I have been just as influenced by many writers, journalists, painters, artists and social activists. There are a huge bunch of people who inspire me…”

What does being the sex symbol of Transvision Vamp feel like..?

“…100% passion…”

Sometimes you express yourself in the language of sex and drugs…

“…Of course….because I have found sex very agreeable….and the drugs….I take whatever will increase the enjoyment of the night..”

Now you are concentrating on salvaging the Racine project.Re-invention or Evolution?

“…Evolution I suppose. If you have belief and keep your wits about you you are able to distinguish the ideas which are true from the mistakes which should be trashed.Of all forms I don’t believe you can’t truly get it right and praise from the ordinary member of the public.I do think I have radical magic in my life.I have learnt from lots of different tragedies. It is the case that if you are open (genuine) everything follows easily…”

In between the “suicide” of punk and the garage (strands) of melodies that was new wave. What is your musical philosophy?

“…My musical philosophy consists, sincerely,of believing (feeling) the music….”

And that results evidently in a certain urban glamour. This time you flirted with “french singing” What is the Europe of Wendy James?

“….I adore the french. It is something instinctive. But more than the music or the cinema of the golden age, what enthuse me about France particularly is the figure of Jean Luc Godard. There you find an individual who has mesmerized perfectly under the cloak of pop culture, politics and human nature, tremendously serious but from the template of an artist or stylist. Just think Of Brigitte Bardot in Contempt.!…”

and from your most recent visit to Spain, what will you take away from here?

“…I believe the Spanish rock scene is incredible and Racine will fit right in.More passionate and hot that anything in London for decades. Now I live in New York but I would love to come here all the time as I feel I have my best friends in the world here.My time in Granada,Madrid and Barcelona was wonderful, too perfect.I think the people in Spain and France are far better than the people of any other country.I dislike some of them a lot.Even people in my own country can seem downmarket and not very stylish to my eyes. You are More attractive, more cool..”

End.
